ACOUSTIC
DESIGN
As
part of the redevelopment of the Beijing TV Station in Beijing, a 1,400
seat theatre is being included for broadcasting of live performances.
This theatre has been designed by Nikken Sekki Architects of Japan, in
conjunction with the Department of Radio, Film & TV Design
(DRFT) and Beijing Television.
The theatre is a conventional show theatre incorporating seating on two
levels and a cruciform back-of-house area with a revolving stage. The
theatre has a back-of-house volume that is significantly greater than
the auditorium introducing characteristics into the acoustic design
which presented a significant challenge.
While operating principally as a theatre the brief required use of the
venue for occasional symphonic concerts and recitals. The addition of
an orchestral shell and VIP seating added to the complexity of the
acoustic design as it is a true multi-purpose theatre providing good
acoustic design for shows, live theatre and concert performances.
The theatre can operate in two modes with variable acoustics which
combined with optimum placement of lateral reflectors provides an ideal
acoustic environment for this prestigious theatre.
One of the first theatres to be designed with western architects and
acoustic designers, the Beijing TV Theatre represents a step forward in
Chinese interior design and with its complete glass enclosed outer
shell will provide a stunning entrance to the new Beijing TV facilities
when they open in 2005 for use during the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
