The National Gallery of Victoria has recently
undergone a major upgrade and extensive renovations. Marshall Day
Acoustics has been pleased to have been associated with the Architects Mario
Bellini and Metier3 in Melbourne on this important and
exciting project.
The upgrade has increased exhibition space by 25%
and improved visitor access and enjoyment. The paintings too have
benefited from the carefully controlled environment in which they now
reside.
In addition to the acoustic design of the gallery
spaces and circulation areas, two new lecture theatres have been have
been added and their sound isolation from the galleries was a critical
consideration.
The requirement for a controlled environment
impacted on the air conditioning system - air quality, temperature and
humidity are now critical factors in the preservation of the artworks.
Consequently the air conditioning plant is larger with increased duty
to cope with improved air filtration and higher airflows all of which
means increased noise. Improved noise control treatment was included in
this heritage building where changes were to be kept to a minimum.
Marshall Day Acoustics was also acoustic
consultants at the other NGV site in Federation square, The Ian Potter
Centre.
